Triskele Books Giveaway Tour, Day 1 - Complicit by Gillian Hamer

We're jumping right into daily giveaways on Colorimetry! A day or two early!!  :-D  As a special treat, I've invited Triskele Books to come and share their entire collection with us. Every day will see a new book, a new author, a new interview and a new giveaway... culminating with a Release Day Party on June 1st!  Please welcome...

Triskele Books is a writers’ collective: story, time and place.

The spirals of our triskele logo represent the concept of our collective – author independence balanced by mutual support. Going it alone, together.

Triskele Books was formed in 2011, by Gillian Hamer, JJ Marsh and Liza Perrat - highly-acclaimed writers who share a passion for good stories.

Gillian writes paranormal mysteries - chilling tales of sinister crimes along the Anglesey coast.

JJ is creating the Beatrice Stubbs series - international crimes set against striking backdrops ranging from Athens to Zurich.

Liza evokes the horror and joy of revolutionary France through the eyes of Victoire and rural Lucie-sur-Vionne.

In 2012, three more authors joined the team, each with their own distinctive slant on time and place: Jasper Dorgan, Jane Dixon-Smith and Catriona Troth.

Jasper writes a compelling story of love, duty and courage set in the war-ravaged deserts of British occupied Aden in 1965.

Jane recreates ancient worlds, from 6th century Briton to the 3rd century Roman east.

Catriona is a British/Canadian writer, fascinated by stories that explore identity and dislocation.

So what’s the connection?

Setting and atmosphere, culture and legend, history and landscape all combine to create the rich and satisfying experience of Triskele Books.

We want to take you on a journey.

We want to transport you to another place.

We want to tell you a story.

Follow Triskele Books on

Today, Liza Perrat begins by interviewing Gillian Hamer, author of Complicit, who is offering an e-copy giveaway of her third Triskele Books novel, Complicit:

Complicit
Complicit
by Gillian E Hamer
Paperback
Expected Publication: June 1, 2013

On the beach stood the adverse array (of Britons), a serried mass of arms and men, with women flitting between the ranks. In the style of Furies, in robes of deathly black and with dishevelled hair, they brandished their torches; while a circle of Druids, lifting their hands to heaven and showering imprecations …’

When Roman historian, Cornelius Tacitus, recorded the invasion of the small island of Mona Insulis off the North Wales coast in 60AD – the beginnings of a propaganda war against the Druidic religion began.

Two thousand years later, that war is still being fought.

For two millennia, descendants of a small sect of Anglesey Druids have protected their blood lineage and mysterious secrets from the world. Until members of this secret society are murdered one by one.

Detective Sergeants Gareth Parry and Chris Coleman, along with new girl, DC Megan Jones, must stop this killer at all costs. What they discover will shock the whole police team and leave consequences which have an impact like no crime in the history of the force.

Set along the dramatic Menai Straits, Complicit is a story of greed, loss and obsession.

Gillian Hamer is a company director and a crime fiction writer who lives in the UK, and divides her time between the Midlands and North Wales. She is also a regular columnist for Words with Jam, a magazine for writers.

Liza PerratI have read and enjoyed your first two Triskele Books novels, The Charter and Closure, both modern-day mysteries interwoven with historical fact, and a touch of the paranormal. How do you think this crossing of genres has affected your publication possibilities?

I think it pretty much made up my mind for me that indie publishing was the way forward for me. I do have an agent, who represents me for my straight crime detective novels, but she made it very clear early on that no publisher would take crime/ghost stories or thriller/historical mysteries. Publishers need to be able to pigeon-hole books and obviously that wasn't going to happen with my books. As cross-genre was what I really wanted to write (although that was never a deliberate choice) and I wanted to see my books in print - I had a problem. I've never been one to give up at the first obstacle so it was a matter of finding a way around it. Luckily, I wasn't alone and knew some wonderful writers who, for one reason and another, found themselves in similar positions. And so Triskele Books was born.

Is there any particular reason you choose to set your novels around North Wales and the island of Anglesey?

You can probably blame my parents! My dad in particular has always loved North Wales, we think it's in the genes as his family are supposed to be from there originally. Then we made good friends who lived in Holyhead so ventured onto Anglesey when I was about ten. The first holiday there I recall I got mumps and it rained every day. Not the best start. But with good weather, there is nowhere in this country that can beat the island. I adore the sea. It has echoes of Cornwall, the most stunning scenery, and an immense amount of history and legend which appeals to the writer in me obviously. I find it so much easier to relax and write up there. Besides ... It's a better option than writing about Birmingham!

Do you think that your job as a company director has helped you as an author?

Not really. Not from a writing perspective. If anything it's a hindrance as I have so little time to dedicate to writing. In fact, I think I'm quite an oddity being so business orientated and yet having this free spirit side too. I think since starting Triskele maybe my managerial and business skills have come in useful though.

What advice would you give to beginning novelists?

Ooh, goodness. I'm not sure I'm qualified to give advice to anyone. Learn your craft I guess. Write for yourself and write what you love and read every spare moment you can. And don't rush. If you get to the level where you want to submit to agents or publishers, take advice, even if you don't like what you hear, and make sure your ms is perfect. And if you get chance to join a writing community - real life or online - grab the opportunity with both hands. You'll learn so much more from mixing with other writers, and you'll soon connect with those who understand you and your writing - and vice versa. Actually ... That does all sound quite knowledgable!

Can you tell us about your work with Words with Jam?

Yes, I love having the opportunity to keep my hand in with non-fiction writing. I think I've been involved with WWJ since the Ed, Jane Dixon Smith, came up with the idea. My regular feature looks at novels that have been developed into other formats, like film or television. I've been lucky enough to interview some fabulous authors. Michael Murpurgo. Ann Cleeves. David Hewson who wrote the novel of The Killing from the Danish television series. I love the interaction and find I've learned such a lot along the way too. It's really interesting and rewarding.

What are you writing about now?

I'm actually about to take a break from writing. The first I can remember in an age. I seem to have been on a hamster's wheel of writing, rewriting, editing for years! Complicit is out in June, that's all finished. So, unless I get another rush job, I plan to take a break over the summer and maybe research a few new ideas that are simmering away. I've got two half-completed novels that probably deserve to be finished, so if I get bored I can always dig them out and start again!

Which book from your shelf do you feel demonstrates a strong sense of time/place?

There really are so many. I am torn. But I'm going to go with Sarah Waters - The Little Stranger. She is maybe not an obvious choice and it's not a particularly strong locale. I do like books that make you ache to visit a location, equally I like writing that burrows into a time and place and examines it so minutely that it brings it to life in your head. And in The Little Stranger not only is there an intense atmosphere throughout but the period and the landscape and in particular that house are so vivid and real. It stays with me. Brilliant writing.

50 GC Bookblast! The Trouble with Toads by Danyelle Leafty

trouble with toads

The Trouble with Toads

Once upon a time a young girl wanted revenge. But first, she wanted to be beautiful. Twelve-year-old Bettony has read enough stories that begin with ‘Once upon a time’ to know what happens to the ugly stepsisters at the end, and she’s determined to escape that fate by any means necessary—even by magic. Unfortunately, when it comes to magic, there is no place for regret, refunds, or exchanges. Even if you accidentally turn your older sister into a toad. If Bettony wants her Happily Ever After to end well, she’s going to have to find a way to turn her sister back into a person before their mother finds out she’s been dabbling with magic and grounds her for life. Tracking down the family magic turns out to be surprisingly easy. Now, if only it came with directions . . . THE TROUBLE WITH TOADS (45,000 words) is the first book in a new upper MG series The Secret Stepsister Society. The second book will be released Summer 2013.

 Author Danyelle Leafty

danyelle Danyelle Leafty writes upper MG and YA fantasy, and is the author of THE FAIRY GODMOTHER DILEMMA series. Danyelle has always loved fairy tales, and prefers stories where someone gets eaten, or at the very least, transmogrified. Much of her inspiration has come from fairy tales, because as G.K. Chesterton so aptly states, "Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten." In her spare time, she collects dragons, talking frogs, and fairy godmothers. She also collects books, and one day hopes to make a house out of them. She enjoys learning languages, fiddling with her harp, and perfecting the fine art of mothering. (It's a lot like trying to herd chickens during a lightning storm while a goat stampede is going on.) One of her heroes is Albert Einstein, particularly for the following quote: "Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The most important thing is not to stop questioning."

Monday - News and Awesome Stuff

Welcome to Monday!!

Are you going to BEA this year? If not... are you participating in Armchair BEA?!  There will be so much going on next week... so many giveaways... so much awesomeness.

At Colorimetry, I will be launching a new tour - The Battle for Princess Madeline by Kirstin Pulioff. The tour is full, but anyone is welcome to share the Launch, which is fun, or get on the Rafflecopter for sharing our Grand Finale on June 14th. If you're interested, sign up HERE.

I am ALSO hosting a mini-series for Triskele Books highlighting a new author and book every day with interviews and stuff which will include a new giveaway DAILY plus a grand release party on June 1st. I will be sharing that Release Party Post with other bloggers - let me know if you want IN!  :-D

Besides this excitement... and a few pre-written posts... June is pretty much a no-blogging month for me. Lol. I have two birthday parties and four kids released from school and a general BUZZ of activity and energy at my house that makes blogging nearly impossible. I wish I could share it with you - it's really fun in an insane sort of way. I've gotten used to it since Dash was in Kindergarten and Trinity was born. As soon as the basketball playoffs begin, I feel the build-up. Lol. (The 9th month in any pregnancy is memorable, but spend two of those months watching the playoffs and it's MEMORABLE.)

It's good blogging manners to announce breaks in schedules... not that I keep a schedule, but June will be different. This is my announcement.

3I'm reading the Infernal Devices Series, so I had to participate in this awesome thing hosted by Sheila @ Book Journey.

I finished The Clockwork Prince over the weekend and dived into my signed and personalized copy of The Clockwork Princess Sunday.

This series...

It's got talons, I tell ya!  It gets a good grip and won't let go!!  I don't know how I'm going to go about regular Monday activities when I'm on page 138 of 568. I wish I could turn on the sunshine and swing in a hammock and not come out 'til I've closed the back cover.

Ah well... I'll be in England of a century past in my thoughts, at least.

Mijita Ru, a love story - Part I

Lots of the stories banging around in my head originated from somewhere in the Bible... either from taking a phrase literally or feeling a sudden connection with one of the characters mentioned. Ruth came alive for me in the past few months. I'm not rewriting her story (Ruth 1:1-18) as much as throwing myself into it and bringing raw emotions with me.

I'm reading the Immortal Instruments series and it's so cool how Cassandra Clare uses Ruth's message to Naomi, adapting it to her story. I wrote this first bit before I'd read of Clare's Nephilim... and I didn't use it in my wedding. Lol. But it is so beautiful:
"Entreat me not to leave you, or to turn back from following after you; For wherever you lodge, I will lodge; Your people shall be my people, and your God, my God. Where you die, I will die, and there will I be buried. The LORD do so to me, and more also, if anything but death parts you and me."
Characters:

Mijita is pronounced Mee-hee-ta, meaning "my little daughter".
Mater - Mah-tehr, "mother" incl. "mother-in-law", responsible overseeing female
Pater - Pah-tehr, "father" or "father-in-law" responsible overseeing male
   Perla -  Majita's beautiful sister-in-law
   Achilioin - Orpah's deceased husband
   Mahlon - Ru's deceased husband

1. Mijita Ru

I woke to the sound of snuffling, Mater was crying again. My own eyes felt heavy and resisted opening. I rubbed at them, so puffy it was a wonder they opened at all. The hollow emptiness in my stomach hurt worse. Even my arms felt drained of the energy to rise off my cot and go to Mater.

“She wants to be alone, Mijita.” My sister in law stumbled back into her cot, flopping onto her back. “She sent me away.”

“I’m sorry. This sorrow should be yours and we should be comforting you.”

Perla sighed.

The funeral for her husband had lasted all week. A widow of three years, myself, I felt her pain freshly. Our father, Pater, had sunk into the ground last year with something that slowly ate his health away. The passing of Achilion last week was my sister, Perla’s, heartbreak, certainly, but all three of us women grieved for our former lives. Women could not own land. We were effectively homeless.

These thoughts churned ‘round and ‘round in my head like a never-ending circle. It always came back to the same question, What do we do now?

Perla echoed my thoughts whispering, “What do we do now?”

Snapshot - How Does Your Garden Grow?

It's a miracle!

On Pinterest I have a board titled "Secret Garden". The secret to my garden is that I have one this year and I usually don't attempt it. I actually have seedlings sprouting. I can hardly contain my excitement:

I decided the trick to managing an acre of plantable land is to throw too many seeds in one pot. Not logical, I know, but look!! It's working!!!

My first roses, etc, are out, too..... LOVE!!

Remember that rose "tree" that I over-pruned last year? I let it sprawl where it will this year... and I have an ABUNDANCE of these blushing yellow beauties. I should take a picture for you, huh?  Alrighty... it's raining, but we don't mind. We're Oregonians (the roses and I).

You may thank Alyce @ At Home with Books for hosting Saturday Snapshot and encouraging me to share pictures I take despite lacking photo-taking skills. Or blame me for my pathetic gardening attempts and baring the bumblings online. Lol.

Free May 18-20 on Amazon - Delilah Dusticle by AJ York - Excerpt

Delilah Dusticle is free to download via Amazon this weekend (Saturday 18th to Monday 20th May). Delilah Dusticle is a short story that has been enjoyed by young people and adults alike. The story has been described as heart-warming, captivating, delightful and fun.
"I loved Delilah, I loved Abi, I loved reading this story"
Jalynreads.wordpress.com

Delilah Dusticle has special powers, she can completely eradicate dust. With her quiver pouch of special dusters Delilah can run up walls and reaches places others just can’t. As a maid in the Fenchurch-Whittington house Delilah’s unusual skills soon lead to her being promoted to Chief Dust Eradicator and Remover. Until one day a broken heart leads to her powers taking an expected turn.

This is the first in a series of touching and funny stories about Delilah Dusticle. Follow her on a journey of self-discovery, friendship and adventure.

Excerpt:

A suit of armour standing beside her in the hall coughed and shot out a puff of dust from its helmet. “Staff are not permitted to fraternise with the family and any shenanigans would lead to instant dismissal,” wheezed the armour.

“Don’t I know it,” said Delilah who then waved her duster at the falling dust cloud making it vanish in mid-air. For good measure she selected her dandelion duster and polished the armour, who was very ticklish and kept giggling. She then made her way to the staff kitchen for dinner.

First let me introduce Grumpy Stone pictured on your left. I found him on a beach in my home town in Essex, England.  Grumpy has become my writing mascot. It is more fun to look at a picture of him than one of me. Promise.

About me? Well I grew up in the UK, but was born in Gothenburg, Sweden. My childhood influences were a mix of Pippi Longstocking and The Flumps. I have always enjoyed making up characters and their life stories, therefore I jumped at the chance to study theatre at the University of Brighton. I later trained as a drama teacher and I have a Masters degree from Goldsmiths. I have gone back to my roots and I now live in Gothenburg, where I am writing the Delilah Dusticle series. People have told me they love reading my stories and I hope you have fun reading them too!

Now..... a sneak peak at the up-comin' sequel!!

The second instalment Delilah Dusticle’s Transylvanian Adventure is due to be published in September. Delilah is invited by Count W. Dracula to prepare his castle for the Hallow Eve Ball, which she and the Dustbusters gladly accepts. All is not what it seems and Dracula has an unusual request for Delilah. Unlike the first book, which is a short story, the second instalment is twice as long. Old characters reveal more of their past and new characters are introduced. There are plenty of twists and turns.  A large proportion of the research for the second book was spent researching magical beings and types of fairies related beings. In the second book you find out what Delilah is exactly.

It has been a great to fun to write and the second story has inspired a series of illustration by my partner Gavin Childs, who also designs the covers. Here is a taster of one of his illustrations for the next book. The book is now in its final stages and undergoing editing. I am like a child in a sweet shop and very excited about it all.

Amazon * Barnes & Noble * The Book Depository

I'm so sorry for reviewing this so early!!  I found The Bitter Kingdom on Edelweiss... and then I just HAD to read it after that maddening ending (if it could be called that) in The Crown of Embers and this is insanely early to review a book that doesn't come out to August. So, I'm apologizing first.

Now to review.  *deep breath*

I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!!

OMG.  Very rarely - maybe once a year - I happen upon one of those books I have to read again immediately upon finishing. For 2013, THIS IS THAT BOOK!! No, that's not right... this book turned the entire series into THAT SERIES. I need to re-read this entire series again from the beginning and how grateful am I that there are Novellas!!  I can't walk away from Elisa - not her, her man, her kingdom, her family, her friendships, her prodigy... none of 'em. I can't. I've unwittingly turned into a fan-stalker-dreamer, whatchamaycallit.

If this book had not been broken down into four separate climaxes, I might not have slept or fed the family until I'd finished. I'm grateful for those moments of... "Phew! Got that done!" even while I was simultaneously delighted to see how much remained yet to be read. Everything that I've come to enjoy in this series is present. Each character deepens even further. The pace remains fast as each one arrives at conclusions and moves on to face new challenges.

I highlighted a few (not-telling-where-they're-from) lines on my Nook just to showcase how Rae's writing style is so vivid:
The icy air feels like tiny knife blades as I draw it into my lungs.
We lock gazes. The rest of the world fades away, and without saying a word, we say good-bye.
I felt it... the more I read, the more intensely I felt it until I found myself fully committed to Elisa. She's become one of my favorite heroes in lit. Ever. She's so... down-to-earth REAL. She always sees herself as the overweight trying-too-hard person she begins the series as. Her humility is beautiful. When it looks like low self-esteem, it's endearing.

I can't reveal any more details of how awesome this book is without spoiling it, and that just isn't an option. I can share one more thing... Rae responded to my fanatical email (very daring of her) with this wonderful snippet:
Here's a factoid that few people know: My not-serious, working title for the first book was ELISA'S BELLY. Which is ridick, but it helped me to keep in mind that I was subverting genre tropes (ie. the amulet of power) and ought to have a sense of humor about the whole thing. :)
Wonderful and purposeful!!  Even in the most serious of situations there is this uncanny rawness, this sense of reality-is-awkward. The mention of "belly" in particular just cracks me up in a way that feels real. I mean, every time I try to be serious and deep - those are the moments I trip over my shoelaces or run into a pole. For me, this series grasped reality in a new way while being entirely fantastical.

I love it!

My Rating: 5.5 - All-time fav. A series for my library!!  I really want to keep this treasure of a series to myself. I love it on such a personal level. I'm kind of shy to admit how much I love it. Lol.

I write books about teens who must do brave things. I'm originally from California, but I moved to Ohio to marry my husband, who is the smartest and therefore sexiest man I know. We live in Columbus with my teenaged stepsons, who are awesome. My books tend to contain lots of adventure, a little magic and romance, and smart girls who make (mostly) smart choices. I especially love to write about questions I don't know the answers to.

Reviews of 3 Favorite Children's Books for Children's Book Week!

In celebration of Children's Book Week -

I give you... my kids' first favorite childhood books!  :-D  These books are so worn & loved, they hold a place on our bookshelves even though no one reads them anymore. I think these come from Baby's First Book Club. I really loved getting something new in the mail every month and these were so great. (They did not ask me to say that... or give me anything for saying that. They should.)

My reviews:

What Baby WantsWhat Baby Wants
by Phyllis Root
Illustrated by Jill Bartow

This baby cries in caps while the relatives try to figure out what he wants. I think my kids loved the idea of such a bad-mannered baby making a big fuss. They loved to see all the family loving the baby and trying to help the baby, but especially the way only "little brother" was able to quiet baby. It is the first moment that such a little family member is such a big hero. The illustrations of the family's attempts to help are funny. The farm animals get involved and it's quite a mess while momma takes a break. The words are easy to change and add noises and animation... it's just really fun. Great book!

My Truck is Stuck! My Truck is Stuck
by Kevin Lewis and Daniel Kirk

This book grew on me the more I read it with my boys. The idea is delightfully silly - the big truck gets stuck and lots of passerby's try to help pull it out of the hole, but nothing works until the tow truck arrives. The illustrations add another level to the story as gophers steal the dog's bones. The kids thought the sneaky gophers were hilarious.

The book is fun to read outloud as each vehicle makes a different honking noise, but that's not my favorite part. What I liked best was the use of the "k" sound. It's not an easy sound to make especially at the end of a word and this book makes it FUN to practice over an over. We enjoyed exaggerating all the words and sounds as we read. My kids never knew they were working on their speech. Lol. Perfect.

Toes Are to TickleToes Are to Tickle
by Shen Roddie & Kady MacDonald Denton

This book is a treasure. It encourages big sibling love for the littler one, which was its first draw for me. The story has a family waking in the morning... getting ready for the day... going for a walk... playing at home... getting ready for bed... the safe, happy routine of a day. I could almost see the thoughts turning in my kids' head as they noticed similarities to our days. How we wake up in the morning with funny hair wearing PJ's. How they get to climb on dad at the end of the day sometimes. How kids everywhere have to brush their teeth. Lol. I love the feeling of love and "family". This book feels like a peek into someone else's day as a family and I never felt like our day had to be exactly like theirs to still recognize that same feeling of "we are family".

I like this book even more, though, because of the backwards sentence structure. Like the title, each sentence starts with the subject and then describes what it's for. "Clothes are for putting on." It gives a different perspective on the entire day, like from a child's view of seeing things simply, for how they bring pleasure to life. "A tree is to hide behind." My kids agreed with the logic.

The Revised Life of Ellie Sweet
by Stephanie Morrill

Ellie Sweet is a lot of things—good girl, novelist, silent adorer of the new boy at school, Palmer. But when “outcast” gets added to the list, she decides it’s time to take reality into her own hands … and tweak it as needed.
In the pages of her book, she’s Lady Gabrielle, favorite of the medieval Italian court. Her once-friends are reduced to catty ladies-in-waiting, and the too-charming Palmer—who in real life never spares her a second word—gets to be nothing more than a rake wracked by unrequited love for her. She even has a perfect real-life villain in the brooding Chase, who hails from the wrong side of town.
But just when she’s getting along great in her fictional world, the real one throws her a few curves. With Chase pursuing her, Palmer wanting to date her—but in secret—and the details of her manuscript going public, Ellie suddenly receives more attention than she ever really wanted. And when her former-friends discover what she’s been writing, they’re determined to teach Ellie a lesson about the severe consequences of using her pen as her sword.
